Why does video quality degrade?

Before fixing bad video, it helps to know what made it bad in the first place. Video quality problems almost always come from one of four places, and identifying the cause tells you which fix will actually work.

Compression is the most common culprit. Every time a video gets re-encoded, uploaded to a platform, sent through messaging, edited and re-exported, it loses information. Aggressive compression turns smooth gradients into blocky bands, scrapes detail off edges, and leaves mosquito noise around text and high-contrast boundaries.

Low capture resolution is the second cause. A video shot at 720p on an old phone, or downloaded at 360p from a streaming site, simply does not contain enough pixels to look sharp on a modern display. No amount of post-processing can add detail that was never captured.
